Abstract
This article serves as a preliminary exploration into the pathology of leadership challenges in the Ashura movement and constitutes an initial step toward elucidating the leadership roles of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) through the lens of one specific leadership model—insightful (or visionary) leadership. Based on what is deemed rationally valid, this model is also acceptable within the framework of Islamic jurisprudence. The model appears to be grounded in sound logic and reasonable principles.
However, regarding the extent to which this model can comprehensively illustrate all dimensions and challenges of Imam Hussain’s leadership, it must be acknowledged that it inevitably contains significant limitations. Nevertheless, given the scarcity of prior studies on this topic and the author’s unawareness of any existing applied models in this specific context, this work may be regarded as a starting point for initiating discourse on the subject within the framework of contemporary leadership theory.
Accordingly, the primary aim of this inquiry is not to offer a conclusive analysis, but rather to open up a scholarly dialogue. It is a beginning, not an end—an invitation to further investigation that may, in the course of a long-term, comprehensive research effort, yield a more robust model capable of integrating various modern leadership paradigms.
The present model highlights four key roles attributed to the leadership of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) during the Ashura uprising: guidance, change agency, advocacy (or spokespersonship), and mentorship. These roles are examined selectively through reference to specific statements of the Imam recorded in the Sahifat al-Husayn (The Treatise of Hussain). The article aims to demonstrate that Imam Hussain fulfilled these roles in their entirety and successfully realized his lofty ideals and visionary goals—despite the fact that the short-sighted may misconstrue his mission as a failure.
