Abstract
The word "guerrilla" originates from Turkish, referring literally to a volunteer ready for battle, or a voluntary military force designated for warfare, as used by the Ottoman Turks. Synonymous terms include partisan and guerrilla fighter. This term typically evokes the image of an armed individual engaged in combat in mountains, forests, and rural areas. Consequently, guerrilla strategy may encompass rural guerrilla warfare, urban guerrilla warfare, or a hybrid form that integrates operations in both urban and rural settings. While extensive literature—books and manuals—has been produced on rural guerrilla warfare, resources and publications specifically addressing urban guerrilla warfare remain significantly scarce. This gap is particularly evident in light of the growing phenomena of urbanization and rural-to-urban migration, resulting in concentrated populations in cities. These demographic shifts necessitate greater focus on urban guerrilla tactics, especially for educational institutions and centers involved in urban security and defense training. This article seeks to explore the nature of urban guerrilla warfare by leveraging the limited existing sources, alongside lessons drawn from urban guerrilla experiences—particularly from the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. It aims to delineate the features of urban guerrilla warfare and clarify its relationship to the more extensively studied rural guerrilla warfare.
