This article analyzes the mechanism of representation and the strategic functions of Ashura’s identity-building components within the Islamic Revolution’s discourse of resistance. Employing a discursive-analytical approach and drawing upon concepts such as representation, collective memory, and political identity, the research demonstrates how this discourse transforms the event of Ashura from a historical incident into a living political model and a framework for contemporary action. The findings indicate that by redefining Ashura’s characters, concepts, and symbols and applying them to modern-day instances, a semantic continuum is established between the past and the present. This process yields three primary strategic functions: first, identity-building and creating cohesion through the construction of a We/Other dichotomy; second, mobilization and generating motivation for sacrifice and enduring hardships; and third, legitimizing the macro-policies of the state. The article ultimately concludes that the discourse of resistance is a hybrid discourse wherein the political sphere is systematically produced, justified, and sustained through the representation of the sacred (Ashura), a fusion that constitutes its main source of power and dynamism.
