The present study, entitled “The Role of Science and Technology in the Sacred Defense,” examines the application of modern knowledge and the cultivation of creativity by combat engineering units during military operations throughout the Sacred Defense era. The ultimate objective of this study is to demonstrate that the scientific and technological efforts of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s combatants and the Iranian people during that period had positive and decisive impacts. The findings indicate that one of the vital functions of engineering in warfare is the design and construction of military bridges to support combat organizations and facilitate the movement of forces. Temporary military bridges are classified into two categories—assault and support bridges—based on their intended use and installation method. During Operation Valfajr 8, an amphibious offensive operation that commenced at 10:00 p.m. on February 9, 1986, from Khosrowabad, a village on the banks of the Arvand River, with the objective of capturing the Faw Peninsula in southern Iraq, there was an urgent need to cross the swift-flowing Arvand River. In response to this operational requirement, the Ba’ath Bridge was constructed through the unparalleled creativity and innovation of combat engineering, representing a structure that was unique of its kind in the world. This study was conducted using a library-based research method and interviews with engineering specialists.
