Insight shares a root with "sight" (Basar) and fundamentally means vision; it is an Islamic concept whose roots are found in the Quran and the words of the Ahl al-Bayt, peace be upon them all, especially Nahj al-Balagha. Insight, like piety, has many levels. Insight has at least three components and three elements, and it can be said to be a triangle formed by three sides. The first element, which is a God-given matter, is special intelligence and acumen; the second is achieved through increasing religious knowledge and correct analyses of historical events; and the third is through self-purification and increasing the level of piety and religiousness. Insight divides individuals into two groups: the masses and the elite, each of whom plays a specific role in society.
