The Islamic world has experienced ups and downs from the beginning until now, for which researchers have mentioned various causes and factors. In recent centuries, with the invasion of colonialism and internal despotism, a decline was experienced once again, after which reformers and thinkers sought remedies to restore dignity and greatness to Islam and Muslims. These reformers, familiar with Islamic teachings and the glorious past of Muslims, saw the only way of salvation in "reviving Islamic identity" and "returning to Islam," thus launching an awakening movement. This movement in Sunni countries has mostly been a political movement with ups and downs, championed by great thinkers such as Sayyid Jamal al-Din Asadabadi, Ayatollah Mirza Shirazi, Ayatollah Boroujerdi, Muhammad Abduh, Allama Iqbal, Sayyid Qutb, and Hasan al-Banna, who strengthened the movement by examining the causes of decline and offering solutions.
Although over the past few decades extremist groups like Wahhabism and the Taliban have tried to ride the wave and divert the movement through division and discord.
The Islamic Awakening in Iran, as the cradle of Shia Islam, began with the Russo-Iranian Wars, where Iranians became aware of internal weakness and Western progress and sought to revive their Islamic and national identity. With the cooperation of the people and clergy, this process continued, passing through a developmental course during the Griboyedov incident, the Tobacco Movement, the Constitutional Revolution, the Nationalization of Oil Movement, the June 5 uprising, and the Islamic Revolution.
With the victory of the Islamic Revolution, which was a turning point in this path, a new phase of establishing a political system and striving to implement the individual and social rulings of Islam began, wherein the awakening role of the leader and architect of the Revolution, Imam Khomeini (RA), is central and fundamental in the formation and continuation of this brilliant fruit. Following him, under the leadership and management of Imam Khamenei (Madzillah), the Islamic Awakening current deepened, and by preserving achievements and presenting and pursuing plans such as the software movement and science production, he has taken steps toward reviving Islamic civilization to pave the ground for the global government of justice and the appearance of the greatest awakener of humanity, Imam Mahdi (AS).
From his perspective, the Islamic Awakening is an undeniable reality that, as a process rather than a project, is boiling in the minds, hearts, and faith of Muslims who have experienced a "sense of humiliation" over centuries, resulting from the past and the dominance of Western colonialism over Islamic societies.
