The Basij, as a blessed tree endowed with a vast body of organized members and supported by revolutionary thought and spirit, as well as valuable experience in the fields of defense and security, politics, society, and, particularly, culture, possesses capabilities and capacities that enable it to effectively defend the ideals of the Imam (Khomeini) and the Islamic Revolution in the context of emerging threats and soft war. In this arena, as in the hard war of the Sacred Defense era, the Basij is capable of confronting the enemy decisively, exhausting its capabilities, and compelling it to accept defeat.
The founder of the Islamic Revolution referred to this popular organization as the “reserve for the comprehensive defense of the Islamic Republic system,” since it is capable of serving as one of the most distinctive and unparalleled defenders of the Islamic Revolution in confronting cultural assaults and soft war as well.
This article examines the principles and characteristics of Basij thought and explores the Basij strategy for countering soft war, with particular emphasis on the perspectives of Imam Khomeini and the Supreme Leader. In the literature review, an attempt is also made to address the concept of soft power, the nature of soft war, and the rationale underlying soft war against the Islamic Republic. Furthermore, the characteristics and indicators of Basij thought, as a source of soft-power generation, are elucidated through an expert interview conducted using a questionnaire. Finally, strategic recommendations are presented based on the findings of the study.
