The concept of asymmetric warfare has emerged in political-military discourse over the past decade. During this period, scholars and military analysts have offered various definitions and explanations shaped by contextual and strategic considerations. However, an impartial examination of these definitions reveals inherent contradictions and inconsistencies. Much of this confusion stems from a lack of attention to the scientific notion of symmetry, which has rendered the concept of asymmetric warfare contentious and ambiguous.
This article aims to clarify the nature of asymmetric warfare through a scientific and logical lens, utilizing principles of physical symmetry and asymmetry. By conceptualizing the battlefield as a physical system and drawing inspiration from Clausewitz's theory of war, the study proposes a revised understanding of warfare. Building on the scientific definition of symmetry, a new and coherent definition of asymmetric warfare is formulated. The article further analyzes key existing definitions in the literature, addresses their shortcomings, and ultimately offers a synthesis that paves the way toward a more rigorous and unified conceptual framework.
